I didn't know the sky could be blue in the winter! It's so bright-- the whole city's albedo's been cranked way up.

It was so nice out, that riding the bus to work sounded almost fun. I find that I'm the only person who thought so-- no co-workers, no emails from co-workers.
But it's warm and quiet (except for the ghastly howling wind) here, so I'm not entirely sure I want to leave

I haven't felt this good in months.

also, I have come to find that I think of "snow" as a thing that you're expected to experience for the first time in your mid-twenties.

I grew up in a suburb that was far enough inland that when we did get snow we always got a lot. It wasn't often so we never knew how to deal with it. The city had two snowplows. I remember several years when school was cancelled! for up to a week at a time.

the town I grew up in would get snowflakes falling from the sky about once every two years, and only once did they ever accumulate on the ground (about an inch?)
Even so, we always stayed home for a few days when it happened.

wow, I can't even relate to that. I remember one winter when I spent entire days building & hanging out in "snow forts" - large snow caves I dug from the 10 ft snow drifts near my house. I never even considered that a collapsing snow cave could be bad news. (my mother would have come looking for me eventually)

I don't think I've ever seen a "snow drift"

I can't picture it.

Jesse should come visit and we should rent a car and drive to Manning Park and see the snow drifts. And then drink hot cocoa.

There were a lot of small ones all over Portland end of yesterday and today -- you might have seen them and not known what you were seeing. It's all those places where the wind pushes the snow up against things, and so it's deeper there than it is in other places, in sort of a rampy thing.

I've only ever seen up to maybe two-three feet max, though, and the ones yesterday were more like two inches. Ten feet is impressive.

it IS beautiful today!

I come from a big snow town. Snowless winters feel wrong.

Congratulations on feeling good. I love the feeling of coming out of a funk, especially if I hadn't been aware I was in a funk.

Fortunately, there's a lot you can do about S.A.D. I suspect none of it is a substitute for actual sunlight, but each and every person I know who says the winter makes them depressed also says the light boxes help.
